VALUE-ADDED SERVICES FOR FIBRE TO THE HOME - Market Potential, Time Horizons and User Groups

Authors:

Tom Evens, Lynn De Vlieger, Elke Boudry, Pieter Verdegem, Lieven De Marez, Erik Vanhauwaert, Koen Casier, Jan Van Ooteghem, Sofie Verbrugge and Bart Lannoo

Abstract: Currently, telecom operators are developing large-scale projects in the internet broadband sector in cooperation with utility companies and public institutions. The roll-out of fibre to the home network infrastructure is often justified by the supposed increasing user demand for high-bandwidth applications. Starting from a user-oriented perspective, however, it is important to consider the utility of fibre networks for future users and to explore those killer applications that can convince end-users to migrate from their current connections to high-bandwidth networks. By means of an international expert survey, this paper tries to identify value-added services that benefit from fibre’s network potential in terms of high speed, symmetry and low delay. In contrast to initial expectations, video delivery applications were found less convincing by the experts whereas health monitoring, online content storage and management services, and desktop sharing were identified as the most promising fibre applications. In terms of timing, content storage and management systems and desktop sharing are identified as more market-ready than health monitoring applications. Whereas the health monitoring and desktop sharing are mainly seen as a service only for the consumer and business market respectively, content management systems are considered useful for business as well as for consumer purposes.

SHOULD COMPANIES BID ON THEIR OWN BRAND IN SPONSORED SEARCH?

Authors:

Tobias Blask, Burkhardt Funk and Reinhard Schulte

Abstract: Sponsored Search allows companies to place text advertisements for selected keywords on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). The objective of the present research is to determine whether and under what circumstances it makes sense, in economic terms, for brand owners to pay for sponsored search ads for their brand keywords. This issue is the subject of a heated debate in business practice, especially when the company is already placed prominently in the organic search results. In this paper we describe and apply a non-reactive method that is based on an A/B-test. It was employed in a case study of a European Internet pharmacy. The results of this study indicate that the use of sponsored search advertising for the own brand name enables advertisers to generate more visitors (>10%), resulting in higher sales volumes at relatively low advertising costs even when the company is already listed in first position in the organic part of the respective SERP.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB MAPPING SYSTEM AND ITS APPLICATION

Authors:

Balqies Sadoun, Omar Al-Bayari and Samih Al-Rawashdeh

Abstract: Recently, there is increase interest in web mapping applications due to the increase use of mobile application, GPS, and digital mapping. The change in the web-based communities, applications and services, from Web 1.0 “read” only technologies to Web 2.0 “read”, “write” and “build” technologies opened a new heaven for public usage and applications. Neogeography (also called Volunteered Geographic Information), came with the increase interest in online mapping and in using geospatial technologies in diverse applications. The development started by mashing up various web resources to create maps. This has improved the web mapping/GIS services despite some difficulties. The open source initiative came (Minnesota Mapserver, GDAL/OGR, GRASS GIS and PostgreSQL/PostGIS packages), in order to offer a technically competitive and open-source alternative solution to the commercial software for web mapping and GIS system applications. GIS and mapping software companies have developed certain development kits that could be used to build a complete GIS and web mapping applications at a very low cost, They also offer a large wide library to be used in developing GIS applications. In this work, we used one of these applications (AspMap) in order to develop our web mapping software. AspMap is a set of high-performance Web mapping components and controls for embedding maps in ASP.NET and ASP.NET AJAX applications. AspMap gives the ability to generate maps, thematic mapping, routing, vehicle tracking and other features that are generated on the server to make maps fully interactive on the client-side. AspMap provides the functionality needed by the user. In this paper, we present a new web–based system named, JOFAST, in order to provide desktop navigation (shortest path), tracking, locating land parcels, distance calculation, map creation, among others. The system is flexible, efficient, easy to use and cost-effective and it is in use now in the city of Amman in Jordan.

REALIZING THE STRATEGIC PLAN OF A TOP-TIER UNIVERSITY IN TAIWAN - A Multi-criteria Evaluation and Alignment

Authors:

Wei-Chien Chou and Sheng-Tun Li

Abstract: The major objective of higher education is to meet the international and local demand for top talent, the core driving force in enhancing its international competitiveness. Since Taiwan is facing increasingly fierce international competition as it begins to open its education market, the government’s "Plan for Developing World-class Universities and Top-tier Research Centers." is aimed at building world-class universities to improve the overall quality of higher education. There is therefore a great need for a set of evaluation criteria and an alignment model to realize the strategic plan of achieving the educational objectives. This paper presents a framework to measure the extent to which the strategic objectives of a top-tier university in Taiwan are aligned with the results obtained through the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). To achieve this, the Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) techniques will be used to create a strategic map. With the cause-and-effect relationship extracted from the strategy map, one can discover gaps that exist between the strategic objectives and the present status. Our study conducted a case study on Taiwan’s higher education, using National Cheng Kung University’s implementation of the top-tier university plan as an example.

Authors:

Kathy Ning Shen and Mohamed Khalifa

Abstract: Given the wide application of computer-mediated discussions in supporting virtual teams, the proposed technical platform, CollectiveThought, is driven by the inherent challenges in virtual team collaboration. Particularly, we propose to apply semantic networks to the representation of computer-mediated discussions and to discuss the ability of the resulting prototype CollectiveThought in facilitating knowledge sharing and developing collective semantic networks within a virtual team. Meanwhile, incorporating features from traditional discussion forums, e.g., self-presentation and asynchronous communication may mitigate the negative effects due to virtuality and allow coordination and collaboration.

BLENDED SHOPPING - Interactivity and Individualization

Authors:

Britta Fuchs, Thomas Ritz, Bastian Halbach and Florian Hartl

Abstract: In this paper we describe in short the main characteristics of the separate sales channels traditional retail and eCommerce with regards to the sales process of consumer goods. Afterwards we explain the integration of both channels to blended shopping. The behaviour of consumers is influenced by technology driven trends from which we identified the development of web 2.0 and social networks as relevant for blended shopping. Additionally mass customization offers new possibilities to meet the increasing demand for individualized goods close to mass product prizes. The combination of the discussed trends and developments is the basis for a method to structure the development of blended shopping concepts for retailer. As examples two prototypes developed according to results of this method are presented in this paper. The paper closes with a future outlook.

APPLYING ASPECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING IN USABILITY ENGINEERING PROCESSES - On the Example of Tracking Usage Information for Remote Usability Testing

Authors:

Andreas Holzinger, Martin Brugger and Wolfgang Slany

Abstract: Usability Engineering can be seen as a crosscutting concern within the software development process. Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) on the other hand is a technology to support separation of concerns in software engineering. Therefore it stands to reason to support usability engineering by applying a technology designed to handle distinct concerns in one single application. Remote usability testing has been proven to deliver good results and AOP is the technology that can be used to streamline the process of testing various software products without mixing concerns by separating the generation of test data from program execution. In this paper we present a sample application, discuss our practical experiences with this approach, and provide recommendations for further development.

RAPID PROTOTYPING ON THE EXAMPLE OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT IN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY - The Importance of their Provision for Software Projects at the Correct Time

Authors:

Andreas Holzinger, Olivia Waclick, Frank Kappe, Stephan Lenhart, Gerbert Orasche and Bernhard Peischl

Abstract: Software prototyping is a powerful method for the identification of usability problems at the very beginning of software development. This paper deals with the development of a prototype used for usability testing and presenting it to stakeholders at the correct time. A low-fidelity (lo-fi) prototype was created for a software product in the automotive industry, however the usability test was shifted to conduct it with the latest build of the software application. This paper emphasizes on the effectiveness of prototypes together with usability studies. It gives an overview about the experiences with usability testing on a high-fidelity (hi-fi) prototype late in the software development process. The main conclusion is that we assume that solving the usability findings of a hi-fi prototype is more difficult and expensive than using results from a lo-fi prototype earlier. In future, we will conduct a lo-fi prototype usability study to confirm this assumption.

STUDY ON SUCCESS FACTORS OF TOURISM WEBSITES

Authors:

Her-Sen Doong, Huichih Wang and You-Yu Chen

Abstract: In the past, continuance intention is treated as the only success factor of information system. However, with the development and prevalence of the Internet, tourism companies and the individuals can communicate with others online. Tourism companies build websites to approach customers. People share personal travelling experience on blogs. Continuance intention will no longer be the only success factor of information system. This study regards recommendation intention and complaint intention as the keys of information system, and probes into success key factors affecting tourism websites based on expectation disconfirmation theory. It divides the disconfirmation in expectation disconfirmation theory into: information quality disconfirmation, system quality disconfirmation, and service quality disconfirmation; and divides the satisfaction in the theory into: information satisfaction, system satisfaction, and service satisfaction. It further explores the success factors affecting tourism websites, and find out if the factors of tourism websites of different attributes are different.

TECHNOLOGY FOR BUSINESS - Supporting Industries as a Main Driving Force for E-commerce Adoption in Saudi Arabia

Authors:

Hani Brdesee, Brian Corbitt and Siddhi Pittayachawan

Abstract: Using a qualitative approach, this study examines e-Commerce adoption in the Saudi tourism industry. The research concerns factors that impact of tourism firms moving their sales online. The study’s findings suggest a relationship between the competency of Saudi’s ICT supporting industry, and the level of e-Commerce integration in the tourism industry. Further, assumptions of global e-Commerce regarding the acceptance of universal payment systems and the intention of firms in pursuing a strategy of e-Commerce may not be valid for some developing countries. The conclusion from this study is that assumptions underpinning global e-Commerce are based on the practices of developed economies and are not yet sufficiently flexible to accommodate elements of difference, as described by this Saudi study.

TOWARD AUTOMATIC GENERATION OF SPARQL RESULT SET VISUALIZATIONS - A Use Case in Service Monitoring

Authors:

Marcello Leida, Du Xiaofeng, Paul Taylor and Basim Majeed

Abstract: The problem of representing RDF data using charts, dashboards, maps and so on has become pressing, in particular to prove the value of the Semantic Web to enhance the analysis of business data. State of the art solutions focus on mapping query results to a specific chart type or view and then manually writing the procedure that creates the final dashboard, but whenever a different visualization model is required, the mapping process needs to be repeated. In this paper we propose a semi-automatic approach that generates various charts from SPARQL queries over data represented as RDF graphs, we introduce and describe the generic approach and present a use case scenario in the context of service monitoring.

STRATEGIC IT USE THROUGH THE ADAPTATION AND INCORPORATION OF BUSINESS-IT ALIGNMENT MODELS

Authors:

Carlos Ramón López Paz and Francisco Maciá Pérez

Abstract: The seamless integration of business and manufacturing processes is a difficult task that can be facilitated through IT consulting services. However, if the structure of these services fails to consider the problems of aligning IT and business, this might affect their effectiveness. This paper presents a methodology to systematize IT consulting services that are obtained by modelling a process system in a pattern that adapts and incorporates a set of reference models to align IT and business. Alignment models are analyzed by the conceptualization of what we call the features of the IT consulting services. To validate the methodology we have defined a process based on a case study method which has been applied in Cuban enterprises in the food production sector.

E-BUSINESS INTEROPERABILITY - Challenges and Opportunities

Authors:

George Feuerlicht

Abstract: Starting with EDI in the 1970s numerous efforts have been made to facilitate electronic business communications. Early attempts based on proprietary document formats and VAN (Value Added Networks) networks have been superseded by a range of international standards that include ebXML, UBL, BODs, GS1, RosettaNet and numerous other XML-based specifications. While successful in some industry domains, overall e-business standardization suffers from complexity of the specifications, difficult customization and limited extensibility leading to expensive implementation and low adoption rates. A common feature of such e-business standards is their focus on documents as the key artefacts of business communications and reliance on document engineering methods for the design of the standard specifications. In this paper we briefly review the main e-business document standards, and then argue that the document-centric interoperability model underlying most current e-business standards produces inflexible specifications that are difficult to evolve and maintain. As an alternative to the document-centric interoperability model we advocate a service-centric approach based on well-designed domain services.

MODELING FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE ONLINE TRAVEL BOOKING

Authors:

Michael Conyette

Abstract: Data was collected from an online questionnaire completed by 1,198 respondents in 2008. Analysis of the dataset involved, correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and logistic regression. In the final model building stage, a logistic regression model is generated containing key factors that lead to online travel booking intention. These factors are a unique set of socio and psychographic variables that can be used to more accurately predict website booking of travel products. The contribution to literature that this research makes is that it appears to be one of only a few models available for predicting travel product booking. For instance, this model predicts that consumers who previously booked specific travel products such as hotels or airline tickets will have a greater intention to book other travel products online. This research study also shows the relevance of the Theory of Reasoned Action to online travel but it goes further by enabling the quantification of the strength of variables such as key beliefs, attitudes and subjective norms.

Authors:

José I. Aznar, Eduardo Virute, Julian Fernandez-Navajas, Jose Ruiz-Mas, Jose Saldana and L. Casadesus

Abstract: Current B2B (Business to Business) models are not capable to cover neither customer expectations in terms of quality nor personalization. Network, service and equipment providers are tied to traditional business models, missing the opportunity to increase their revenues derived from the integration of Quality of Experience (QoE) models in their frameworks. In this work, we propose a B2B QoE model which comprises the main guidelines to successfully integrate the QoE within the value chain and provide with added-value services to potential subscribers. We also evaluate the potential QoE end-user market for six European countries. Results indicate that there is a niche for QoE based models which rely on the joint action of value chain actors and its agreement with the regulatory environment.

HANDWRITING RECOGNITION ON MOBILE DEVICES - State of the Art Technology, Usability and Business Analysis

Authors:

Andreas Holzinger, Lamija Basic, Bernhard Peischl and Matjaz Debevc

Abstract: The software company FERK-Systems has been providing mobile health care information systems for various German medical services (e.g. Red Cross) for many years. Since handwriting is an issue in the medical and health care domain, a system for handwriting recognition on mobile devices has been developed within the last few years. While we have been continually improving the degree of recognition within the system, there are still changes necessary to ensure the reliability that is imperative in this critical domain. In this paper, we present the major improvements made since our presentation at the ICE-B 2010, along with a recent real-life usability evaluation. Moreover, we discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of current systems, along with some business aspects of the vast, and growing, mobile handwriting recognition market.

Abstract: Together with the diffusion of the Internet both private and legal persons have designed a wide variety of information intensive services. At the same time, concepts and methods have been developed to facilitate the description, discovery, composition, and consumption of these services. However, the selection of the right service still represents a major problem for consumers, since policy-, reputation- or trust-based selection techniques often do not lead to the desired results. In this paper a multi-dimensional service selection model - including social, technological, economic, and political considerations - is presented that can help service consumers in this sketchy and complex task.

Abstract: Today, crime and fear of crime are related to a loss of social control in large cities. In combination with the bystander effect, help might not be provided in the case of an emergency. This paper suggests the framework of a Community Watch Service. The conceptional architecture enables citizens to join virtual, territorial communities. Citizens can create their own virtual territories. These territories are linked to software services offering functionality like reporting damage to public property, receiving information from public authorities or organizing help in the neighborhood. The framework aims to improve social control in a positive way and increase public safety in large cities. We demonstrate the Community Watch Service as a prototype which is available for standard web browsers and Android-based mobile phones.

QUALITY OF SERVICE AGGREGATION IN E-BUSINESS APPLICATIONS

Authors:

Nabil Fakhfakh, Frédéric Pourraz and Hervé Verjus

Abstract: In e-business applications, enterprises build their processes to achieve their business goals. One of the architectural models of e-business applications is a service-based approach. This approach consists in orchestrating the e-services offered by one or several enterprises partners in order to build the desired business processes. It is important for the enterprises to ensure client satisfaction in order to be more attractive and more competitive. Quality of Service has a significant impact on client satisfaction. Therefore, clients need e-business applications with high Quality of Service to be satisfied. In this context, we propose in this paper an approach that allows clients to measure the satisfaction degree of the services orchestration. This approach takes into account client’s preferences on QoS attributes and their related dependencies in the measurement of the satisfaction degree. We treat two examples of services orchestration and show how does the measured satisfaction allow the client to choose the best one.

RESOURCE ORIENTED MODELLING - Describing Restful Web Services using Collaboration Diagrams

Authors:

Areeb Alowisheq, David E. Millard and Thanassis Tiropanis

Abstract: The popularity of Resource Oriented and RESTful Web Services is increasing rapidly. In these, resources are key actors in the interfaces, in contrast to other approaches where services, messages or objects are. This distinctive feature necessitates a new approach for modelling RESTful interfaces providing a more intuitive mapping from model to implementation than could be achieved with non-resource methods. With this objective we propose an approach to describe Resource Oriented and RESTful Web Services based on UML collaboration diagrams. Then use it to model scenarios from several problem domains, arguing that Resource Oriented and RESTful Web Services can be used in systems which go beyond ad-hoc integration. Using the scenarios we demonstrate how the approach is useful for: eliciting domain ontologies; identifying recurring patterns; and capturing static and dynamic aspects of the interface.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCAVENGER HUNT ON MOBILE DEVICES: FROM E-EDUCATION TO E-BUSINESS - A Triple Adaptive Mobile Application for Supporting Experts, Tourists and Children

Authors:

Katharina Holzinger, Manfred Lehner, Markus Fassold and Andreas Holzinger

Abstract: This paper reports on the design and development of a mobile application to support archaeological education and to raise awareness for our cultural heritage by making use of the powerful notion of play. The application reads information from Quick-Response Codes (QR-Codes) on paper sheets, which can be placed directly at the points of interest. Users can now follow an archaeological scavenger hunt along those points of interest. They start at one point of interest and get hints on how to find the others. This makes use of collective intelligence, i.e. using the mobile devices amongst the group of users as social communicators in order to get specific information on the target; through these additional discussions both the one who states questions and the one who gets the answer can learn incidentally. Although this App has been developed for educational purposes, it can be used just for fun, e.g. for a children’s birthday party: Hiding treasures in various spots in the garden and delivering information on QR-codes showing hints on how to find the spots. Moreover, the use of the ArchaeoApp in the Tourism modus, is a challenge for e-Business.

AN APPROACH TO METAMORPHIC TESTING FOR WS-BPEL COMPOSITIONS

Authors:

Carmen Castro-Cabrera and Inmaculada Medina-Bulo

Abstract: Nowadays, Web Service (WS) compositions play an important role in business processes. Languages for composing web services, such as the OASISWS-BPEL 2.0 standard, open a new field for large-scale programming. However, they also present a challenge for traditional quality assurance because of the inclusion of specific instructions for concurrency, fault compensation, and dynamic service discovery and invocation. Metamorphic Testing (MT) has proved useful to test and improve the quality of traditional imperative programs. This paper discusses how to use MT to test WS compositions in WS-BPEL. Although MT has not been previously applied to this area, promising results have been obtained in a number of different applications. A component diagram for a testing framework implementing this approach is included.

Abstract: The current paper focuses on the definition and evaluation of IP interactive services as new distribution channels to establish a closer relation with end-users. These services present features which make them to be an attractive distribution media that requires the analysis of the cognitive and affective aspects experienced by end users during the interaction with them. To evaluate these channels an IPTV (IP-Television) based service has been developed including different existing situations. To this target, previous analyses have been driven to establish the most relevant variables which define users’ behavior during the purchasing process. The obtained results may lead enterprises’ relationships with their clients, increasing their implication and growing their loyalty.
