Title:

Advances in AI-Based Garment Returns Prediction and Processing: A Conceptual Approach for an AI-Based Recommender System

Abstract: The ever-increasing volume of returned garments not only represents a huge increase in costs for retailers or manufacturers and an inventory risk that is difficult to calculate, but also has a high environmental impact due to the destruction of the garments and the necessary logistics processes. Most of the existing solutions to these problems aim to eliminate returns altogether. However, many returns cannot be avoided, e.g. orders for a selection of products, repairs or quality-related returns. For this reason, this study explores the potential of AI to predict returns and make recommendations on how best to plan the reverse logistics network, resulting in environmental and economic benefits. To this end, an extensive literature review was conducted to capture the current state of research. Based on this, a conceptual approach for the development of an AI-based recommender system for the best possible handling of returns will be derived.

Title:

Exploring the Viability of Digital-Only Banking: An Empirical Investigation Using the Push-Pull Model

Abstract: Fintech has the potential to revolutionize the banking industry through various digital channels. Digital-only banking is one such channel emerging as a potential disruptor of traditional banking business models. This study applies the push-pull model as a theoretical framework to examine digital-only banks as an alternative. Our sample consists of 214 respondents assessed using component-based structural equation modeling. The results show that low service quality and inconvenience more than customers’ perceived advantage affect digital-only banks as an alternative. This study’s findings provide valuable insights into the design of digital-only banking services.

Title:

PhotoHandler: Manipulation of Portrait Images with StyleGANs Using Text

Abstract: There are many methods and approaches used for manipulation of images. However, according to the state of the art, the ones related to StyleGANs has shown better overall results when it comes to this task. In this work, we proposed to use StyleGANs in order to allow the manipulation of portrait images using text. We used a method called StyleCLIP which combine StyleGANs with CLIP, a neural network that connects text and images. This method has two numeric parameters, which are the manipulation strength and the disentanglement threshold. The contribution consists of adjusting these parameters based on the entered text in order to improve the result of the edited image. With this technology, we built an app that will help people with poor digital skills to edit their photos easily by using words. The opinion of the users of the application has been validated through a survey. The results obtained allowed us to demonstrate that our method make a satisfactory image edition for most users.

Title:

Detection and Verification of the Status of Products Using YOLOv5

Abstract: Supermarkets generally do not have an efficient supervisory mechanism for inventory and warehouse management that stockists can use in their day-to-day activities. Our goal is to develop an application based on computer vision models, for the detection, counting and verification of the status of bottled and canned products. Comparisons were made between the different models for the detection of objects through an image, under the verification of parameters, performance and metrics, in order to obtain the best models. Once the YOLOv5 object detection model was chosen, training began with a dataset of own images containing products in good and bad condition in order to identify if they are damaged. Finally, the trained model was coupled to the development of the application. This application allows the user to check which products are in a loaded or taken image, as well as their quantity and status. Additionally, to facilitate the registration tasks of the storekeepers, the application allows keeping a daily record of said products. The mAP@0.5 obtained by our model was 93.09%, while the mAP@0.5:0.95 was 89.04%. Therefore, given the results, this model can perform the task of detecting the status of proposed bottled and canned products.

Exploring the Test Driven Development of an Information Retrieval System

Abstract: Today’s society is heavily driven by data intensive systems, whose application promises immense benefits. However, this only applies when they are utilized correctly. Yet these types of applications are highly susceptible to errors. Consequently, it is necessary to test them comprehensively and rigorously. One method that has an especially high focus on test coverage is the test driven development (TDD) approach. While it generally has a rather long history, its application in the context of data intensive systems is still somewhat novel. Though, rather recently, a microservice-based test driven development concept has been proposed for the big data domain. The publication at hand explores its feasibility regarding the application in an actual project. For this purpose, a prototypical, microservice based information retrieval system is implemented in a test driven way with particular consideration for scalability.

Unveiling the Digital and Sustainability Convergence: Leveraging Blockchain for Grand Challenges Oriented Business Model Innovation

Abstract: Social and ecological challenges are increasingly threatening the world, asking for concrete actions from all the actors and sectors of our society. Broad social and environmental problems have been collected below the definition of “Grand Challenges” (GCs), to represent their wicked nature and tough resolution. In order to advance these goals, the United Nations in 2015 ratified the so-called 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This new imperative implies firms to shift towards new sustainable practices and innovate their business models. Management research has identified in emerging technology one of the most powerful means for Business Model Innovation (BMI). In this regard, blockchain is claimed to have the ability to drastically restructure firms’ business structures and markets. By way of an inductive multiple-case study analyzing 4 start-ups in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) field, this research proposes a conceptual model summarizing three actionable characteristics (Asset enabler, Trust machine, Collaborative and coordinated action enhancer) through which blockchain technologies can drive BMI, making it clear on how they enable to embed GCs in the business model components.

Title:

Industrial Transformation Roadmap for Digitalisation and Smart Factories: The Danish SMEs Model

Abstract: Today only some sections of the supply chain are digitalized, but some companies are also already far with Industry 4.0, where the virtual factory and the physical factory work closely together (digital twin). Industry 4.0, which started in Germany among the large OEMs, seems to have not resonated much with SMEs. There is an imminent challenge of coming up with a feasible transformation roadmap which will resonate effectively and efficiently with SEMs as they are the core backbone of every performing economy. This research investigates Smart Factories/Industry 4.0 in the Danish SMEs model perspective. This research’s main objectives are to develop a feasible roadmap in the form of a conceptual framework for easy industrial transformation to the digitalizing and smart way of (doing things) developing products and/or services. This research employs quantitative research methods such as surveys and interviews where applicable as well as a literature review in the SMEs perspective. Previous research has shown that the digital evolution coined as Industry 4.0 was started among large companies. However, this initial precedence has not resonated very much with all-inclusive industrial evolution, especially within the SMEs perspective. The main industrial implication will be the definition of a clear feasible roadmap for what this research terms as an industrial transformation process - “digital change management process – Industry 4.0/Smart factory” in the industrial SMEs perspective – the Danish Model. This research seeks to propose a conceptual smart factory roadmap in an Industry 4.0 perspective, which could be adopted among manufacturing SMEs to effectively, and efficiently transform their production operations. Roadmap for Implementing Business Intelligence Systems in Higher Education Institutions: Exploratory Work

Abstract: Higher Education Institutions must define and monitor strategies and policies essential for decision-making in their various areas and levels, in which Business Intelligence plays a leading role. This research addresses the problem of Business Intelligence system adoption in Higher Education Institutions, with a view, in the first instance, to identify and characterise the strategic objectives that underpin decision-making, activities, processes, indicators and information in Higher Education Institutions. After a literature review, it was found that the absence of a roadmap that can serve as a reference to implement a Business Intelligence system in Higher Education Institutions may limit the adoption of this type of solution. Therefore, this research intends to present the methodology of a proposed roadmap for the implementation of Business Intelligence systems in Higher Education Institutions, that allows for increasing its capacity for analysis and evaluation of the data and information available in the various systems and platforms.

Title:

On the Challenges of Applying Test Driven Development to the Engineering of Big Data Applications

Abstract: Big data (BD) is one of the major technological trends of today and finds application in numerous domains and contexts. However, while there are huge potential benefits, there are also considerable challenges. One of these is the difficulty to make sure the respective applications have the necessary quality. For this purpose, the application of test driven development (TDD) to the domain was proposed. In general, the approach already has a rather long history and, thereby, the corresponding challenges are also known. However, since the BD domain has several demanding particularities, this also needs to be accounted for when applying TDD. Yet, to our knowledge, this specific aspect has not been discussed by now. The publication at hand bridges this gap by examining the challenges of applying TDD to the engineering of BD applications. In doing so, it facilitates the approach’s use by practitioners and researchers while also constituting a foundation for further discourse regarding the quality assurance in the BD realm and the TDD approach in general.

An Analysis of AI Models for Making Predictions: Groundwater Case Study

Abstract: The development and application of intelligent models assure continuous monitoring and improvement of quality processes that control most of our city’s infrastructure. Regression models are a popular tool for making predictions in multiple fields, including finance, healthcare, and weather forecasting. However, the limitations of traditional regression models have prompted the development of more advanced techniques, such as Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), which have revolutionized the field of prediction modelling. This paper’s main objective is to explore the possibilities that intelligent models offer to real-world problems, specifically the ones that require making predictions to operate, manage, and safeguard the resources and wellbeing of people. The study focuses on groundwater measurements and their applications in predicting reservoir levels, as well as the possibility and criticality of floods, droughts, and other natural phenomena. By analysing available public or open data, it is possible to uncover hidden insights that lead to pattern identification, system behaviours, and risk modelling. The goal is to raise awareness of the power of artificial intelligence and how to integrate them into modern business practices.

Decentralized power generation and its stabilization of the power grid is a problem that can be solved by more accurate monitoring of power consumption using smart meters. The overall objective is to prevent blackouts. Therefore, the reliability of the used smart meter architecture is an important factor. In the present paper, a systematic cost-benefit analysis focused on Germany is performed to demonstrate the economic advantages of a reliability-optimised smart meter architecture.

Optimizing B2B Relationships with Post-Covid Sales and Marketing Automation Through ERP Implementation: A Value-Driven Approach in Bangladesh

Abstract: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a powerful software program created to combine and streamline several company processes. Companies in developed countries frequently use it to increase their general effectiveness. ERP enables companies to meet the specific demands, interests, and behaviours of their customers, who are increasingly seeking individualized experiences. Even with the help of an implementation partner, deploying ERP properly necessitates a solid understanding of the involved process. During the implementation stage, effective communication and responsibility sharing can be challenging. The main goal of this paper is to create a thorough guidebook that offers insightful advice to businesses and their clients throughout the whole ERP deployment process. Six interviews were done to obtain information and address any implementation-related worries in order to accomplish this. These talks led to the creation of an implementation handbook that addressed important challenges and offered useful solutions. A methodology model diagram is also suggested to act as a visual roadmap for an organized and fruitful ERP installation. The objective is to equip businesses and their clients with the information and resources they need to successfully complete the deployment process and get the most out of their ERP system.

Trustworthy Decentralized Last-Mile Delivery Framework Using Blockchain

Abstract: The fierce competition in eCommerce is a painful headache for logistics companies. In 2021, Canada Post’s parcel volume peaked at 361 million units with a minimum charge of $10 per each. Last-Mile Delivery (LMD) is the final leg of the supply chain that ends with the package at the customer’s doorstep. LMD is the most costly process, accounting for more than 50% of the overall supply chain cost. Platforms such as Uber Eats and Amazon Flex help overcome this inefficiency and provide an outstanding delivery experience by enabling crowd-shipping using freelancer drivers willing to deliver packages in exchange for compensation. However, the current generation of LMD platforms that leverage crowd-shipping are centralized platforms and behave as intermediaries that charge commission fees. They lack transparency, and most of them, if not all, are platform monopolies in the making. This paper introduces the design of the next-generation LMD crowd-shipping platforms by leveraging Blockchain and smart contracts. A decentralized crowd-shipping platform for LMD that is scalable, reliable, secure and promotes fairness. The proposed platform connects the primary stakeholders of LMD without intermediaries. The stakeholders could use the platform to manage shipping and delivery, handle disputes, maintain fairness, and mitigate monopoly power. Our approach replaces the need for a centralized intermediator such as Uber by introducing a decentralized reputation model that executes over a cryptocurrency-less blockchain network. Our proof-of-concept implementation of the proposed framework demonstrates the potential of blockchain technology to decentralize the crowd economy. We used informal security analysis to illustrate how the proposed decentralized reputation model discourages misuse and encourages fairness between parties.

Abstract: Marketplaces as a highly emerging type of business models have been implemented in a wide corpus of contexts. This paper aims to both enrich and implement the marketplace model within the university’s ecosystem. We introduce FonBoard - a novel marketplace platform that brings together companies, students, organizations and teaching staff with the primary goal to support students in career development and matching with the most relevant employers. The Fonboard platform is described in detail from the perspective of features, roles, processes and business model. The initial results of the platform usage are presented as well.

A Context-Based Approach for Real-Time Adaptation Need Detection

Abstract: The increasingly dynamic and changing environment in which business processes are evolving requires companies to adapt them frequently. Thus, we propose in this paper a new context-based approach recommending to analyze well the environmental changes. This approach recommends to structure knowledge required for process adaptation need in accordance with our BPMN4V-Context meta-model, which supports the modeling of the operating environment, using the context along with the versions of the model of each BPMN process and their use conditions. It also advocates (i) a filtering activity to retain only significant context changes in the monitored data, as low-level context parameters, (ii) a reasoning activity to deduce high-level context parameters from filtered low-level ones, enhancing the current situation of running processes and (iii) examining the current situation before its analysis in order to resolve problems related to the used units and synonym values. Finally, the feasibility and applicability of this approach is demonstrated by a case study from the crisis domain and two performance tests.

Abstract: This paper aims to explore the relationship between innovation and competition and identify the conditions that affect the industry’s innovation and welfare. The authors analyze various factors, including the properties of product market payoffs, to determine whether competition increases or decreases industry innovation. The ultimate goal of this study is to provide policy recommendations that support innovation and competition.To achieve this objective, the authors conducted a survey to collect responses from industry professionals and identify the challenges that hinder innovation and competition. They examined several models and case studies,to understand how competition drives innovation. Despite the challenges, leading business consultants found that increased competition leads to higher productivity in various industries, including manufacturing and services.The study’s findings reveal that the recommended policy effectively overcomes the challenges related to innovation and competition sustainability. These findings have practical implications for regulatory organizations, highlighting the importance of adopting these policies to ensure innovation and competition for small and medium-sized internet-based firms.This paper presents a thorough examination of the correlation between innovation and competition, outlines the key elements that foster both innovation and competition, and suggests policy measures to bolster innovation and competition while improving product market outcomes.

Next Step: How Digital Literacy Affects Digital Transformation in Companies

Abstract: Digital transformation has become indispensable for many companies in the current digital era. However, the success of any digital transformation project is largely determined by several prerequisites. One such prerequisite is undoubtedly the digital literacy of the company’s employees. This paper, therefore, argues for the measurement of digital literacy in companies and subsequent assessment of the effects that the digital literacy of employees has on digital transformation in the company. While there are several already existing “universal” frameworks for measuring digital literacy, they are not perfectly suited for the specifics of a business/company environment. Thus, the paper encourages future research in this area and announces the intent to create an index for measuring digital literacy in a business/company context. This will serve as a basis for constructing a framework for assessing a company’s digital transformation readiness based on its employees’ digital literacy level.

Development of a Procedure for the Processing of Raw Sensor Data from Smart Devices for Utilisation in Process Mining

Abstract: This research paper proposes a novel approach to address the blind spot in process mining. The method involves collecting raw sensor data using a smartphone application and transforming it into an event log using Microsoft Power Query. The experimental process is then discovered using process mining to reduce the blind spot in process mining. The study demonstrates the potential of process mining in previously unexplored areas and shows how enterprises that could not previously benefit from process mining can now do so. The paper concludes by highlighting the importance of this research in bridging the gap in process mining and making it accessible to a wider range of businesses.

Towards the Creation of a Holistic Video Analytics Platform for Retail Environments

Abstract: Retail is expected to be one of the industries that will benefit most from advances in artificial intelligence (AI) in the future. One branch of AI is video analytics, which is used to analyze the behavior, flow, and interactions of customers in a store. Properly implementing features to optimize store operations, prevent theft, or provide targeted advertising can increase a store’s profitability and reduce shrinkage. This paper proposes an adaptation and specification of an action design research approach that forms the basis for implementing a holistic video analytics platform that could potentially incorporate a variety of identified beneficial features. In addition, the challenges in this regard are explained and an outlook on the future realization of such a platform is provided.

A Strategy for Structuring Teams Collaboration in University Course Projects

Abstract: The increased demand in today’s work environment for individuals with diverse skill sets, fast skill acquisition, and ability to collaborate is as a consequence of the rapidly evolving technological environments. Thus, institutes of higher learning have increasingly adopted e-learning platforms, owing that one of the defining aspects of these platforms is the capacity to facilitate collaborative engagement. This adoption has resulted in curriculum changes, and the development of tools and further specialized platforms that are focused on the acquisition and transfer of particular soft, and hard skill sets. One such specialized platform is Teams platform of SQLValidator, a web-based interactive environment for learning, practicing, and acquisition of collaborative problem-solving skills by way of projects centered around the Structured Query Language. In this paper, we give insight into our platform, and the strategy we adopted to ensure the acquisition of SQL, and collaborative skills. To assess its effectiveness, we monitored the activity and performance of our students on an SQL based collaborative project. Our evaluation indicates that our strategy not only gave us practical insight into the student level of SQL skill acquisition, and interaction, which is important for instructors, but is also proved effective in facilitating the acquisition, and transfer of teamwork ethics and collaborative problem-solving skill among students.

Indoor Navigation for Personalised Shopping: A Real-Tech Feasibility Study

Abstract: Consumers in brick-and-mortar stores are increasingly expecting a personalised shopping experience and digital assistance in finding the right products. The retail industry has already undergone a shift towards more ubiquitous in-store technology but smart shopping assistance for consumers is notably absent. Whether physical product search, localisation and navigation could work with contemporary technology is an open question. In an applied research setting conducted on behalf of a retail technology provider, we have analysed the feasibility of introducing a smart shopping workflow based on product search and indoor navigation. In this paper we provide our findings with key contributions in workflow design, mobile application design, and technology fitting concerning localisation and notification of customers.

Towards an Evaluation Concept for Business Simulation Games: Preliminary Work and Piloting in SAP ERP Teaching

Abstract: Business Simulation Games (BSGs) aim to simulate reality and impart knowledge as well as skills in a playful way. To be able to verify the goal attainment, the first steps towards an evaluation concept were taken in this paper. With the exemplary evaluation of Global Bike Go, a series of mini BSGs for SAP ERP teaching, initial indications could be generated about what they (can) achieve. One certain finding is that the games are suitable for beginners whereas the participants’ knowledge gain only shows tendencies. From the overall results, development potentials for the BSGs as well as for the evaluation concept used could be identified. However, due to the small sample and the limiting circumstances, further investigations have to be conducted. In this context, the self-performed actions as well as interactions with other players as significant game elements should be focused more, and especially the interdependency between the BSGs and other teaching materials seems promising. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach is desirable.
