Discovering Organizational Elements for IT Service Brokering from a Literature Review

Authors:

Linda Rodriguez and Oscar Avila

Abstract: New technological trends and models are allowing organizations to easily access to specialized external IT services. As a consequence, IT areas are developing fewer and fewer IT services and relying more on external providers to achieve their customers’ objectives. In this new context, the IT function should move from its traditional role of service builder and operator to a new role of service integrator and broker. However, IT areas are not aware of the organizational elements that need to be implemented to adopt this new role. In order to compensate this lack, this work presents a review of the existing literature intended to identify IT capabilities, roles, skills and strategies that can help IT organizations to act as a service broker. Our findings aim at establishing the basis for a complete approach.

Preserving Anonymity in Fair Exchange Complex Transactions E-Commerce Protocol for B2C/B2B Applications

Authors:

Cătălin V. Bîrjoveanu and Mirela Bîrjoveanu

Abstract: In the electronic commerce context, it is common that a customer wishes to buy a pack of products/services composed of several products/services from different merchants. The customer is interested in buying all products from the pack or no product at all. On the other hand, sometimes the customer wants to buy exactly one product from many merchants, and for this, he specifies in his request more possible products according to his preferences but from these options only one will be committed. The combination in any form of these two types of e-commerce transactions will be named complex transaction. Despite the great variety of multi-party fair exchange protocols proposed until now, there is no solution to address to physical products delivery in complex transactions. In this paper, we propose the first e-commerce protocol for physical products delivery in complex transactions that provides fair exchange and anonymity of the customer.

How Does Conscientiousness Impact on Computer Game Play?

Authors:

Xiaowen Fang

Abstract: With the rise of social media and mobile computing, hedonic components and gamification play a more and more important role in the success of e-business systems. In addition, as a majority of users of e-business have game play experiences, understanding their behavior is essential. This research attempts to investigate user behavior in computer game play and the findings will likely shed lights on how to design gamification features in e-business systems. Based on a conceptual framework of computer game play proposed by Fang, Chan, and Nair (2009), an online survey was designed and conducted to investigate the relationship between personality traits and players’ choice of games. Results suggest that the personality trait, conscientiousness, has an impact on how players choose games. Findings and their implications were discussed.

Smart Retail in Smart Cities: Best Practice Analysis of Local Online Platforms

Authors:

Katrin Schade, Marcus Hübscher and Tanja Korzer

Abstract: Against the background of urban transformation processes aggravated by e-commerce, this paper discusses chances and challenges of local online platforms. Three hypotheses are introduced. Firstly, the rapid emergence of numerous local online platforms in various European countries is linked to the urban heritage of the European City. Secondly, the success of these platforms depends on the integration of diverse services. Thirdly it is argued, that platforms need to adapt to future topics of smart retail which is why a more holistic approach is appropriate. A best practice analysis is conducted, which gives an insight into the variety and complexity of local online platforms.

Innovation Governance in Chinese Family Business: A Case Study

Authors:

Thomas Menkhoff and Ong Geok Chwee

Abstract: Corporate innovation governance can be defined as a systematic approach to align goals, allocate resources and assign decision-making authority for innovation, across the company and with external parties. While the dos and don’ts of innovation governance approaches in non-Asian firms are fairly well researched, little is known about the Chinese way of governing innovation in Asian family firms. This paper provides insights into the innovation management capabilities of Qian Hu, an integrated ornamental fish service provider incorporated in Singapore in 1998. Based on half-structured interviews with its Executive Chairman and MD Mr. Kenny Yap, we exemplify the key components of Singapore’s Innovation Excellence Award (I-Award) and how Qian Hu made them work. The paper attempts to shed light on some of the unique innovation management approaches in Chinese family-owned enterprises, e.g. with regard to ‘family involvement in boards’ which divert to some extent from formal business excellence standards. The paper is part of an on-going research project aimed at examining the specifics of innovation governance in Asian enterprises.

Process Recommendation using Context in Crisis Management: Application to Flood Management

Authors:

Hanane Ariouat, Eric Andonoff and Chihab Hanachi

Abstract: This paper addresses process recommendation in crisis management from relevant facts observed in the field and business knowledge of actors involved in crisis resolution. Facts observed correspond to damage or risk while business knowledge of crisis actors, i.e. actors involved in crisis resolution, corresponds to actions these actors can perform in the field to reduce the crisis and to strategies for using these actions according to the context. The approach recommended in the paper filters facts observed with strategies modelled taking into account the current situation and dynamically builds process models dealing with these facts. Built process models, represented as BPMN diagrams, define actions crisis actors have to perform in the field along with the coordination of these actions. As several strategies are possible to deal with facts, several process models are recommended, each being labelled with its adequacy with the current situation. This paper presents the meta-model for facts and business knowledge modelling along with the recommended approach for process recommendation. Flood of the Loire serves as a case study for process recommendation illustration.

Towards a Service Brokering Model for IT Departments

Authors:

Linda Rodriguez and Oscar Avila

Abstract: The accelerated increase of new IT suppliers and services is allowing organizations to easily access to specialized outsourced services. Consequently, IT departments are increasingly developing fewer IT services and relying more on external providers to satisfy the needs of their customers. This new context requires a change in the IT function, which should move from its traditional role of service builder and operator to a new role of service integrator and broker. However, IT managers do not know in most of the cases which are the capabilities, skills and resources required in the IT area to implement this new role. To cope with this lack, we propose a management model built in two steps: (i) a review of the literature that help us to identify and analyze the current contributions in the IT service brokering area, and (ii) to validate the findings made in the literature review through a focus group with IT professionals and managers. The presented model aims at establishing the basis for a complete approach to help IT organizations to adopt the IT service broker role.

The Users' Perspective on Autonomous Driving - A Comparative Analysis of Partworth Utilities

Authors:

Christina Pakusch, Gunnar Stevens, Paul Bossauer and Tobias Weber

Abstract: Digitisation has brought a major upheaval to the mobility sector, and in the future, self-driving cars will probably be one of the transport modes. This study extends transport and user acceptance research by analysing in greater depth how the new modes of autonomous private cars, autonomous carsharing and autonomous taxis fit into the existing traffic mix from today's perspective. It focuses on accounting for relative added value. For this purpose, user preference theory was used as a base for an online survey (n=172) on the relative added value of the new autonomous traffic modes. Results show that users see advantages in the autonomous modes for driving comfort and time utilization whereas, in comparison to conventional cars, in many other areas – especially in terms of driving pleasure and control – they see no advantages or even relative disadvantages. Compared to public transport, the autonomous modes offer added values in almost all characteristics. This analysis at the partworth level provides a more detailed explanation for user acceptance of automated driving.

Personal Authentication Method based on Human Preference Prediction using Machine Learning

Authors:

Tatsunori Mochida and Masaki Inamura

Abstract: With the recent increase in the data communication speed of the network, large-scale data exchange has become possible at high speed. Due to the appearance of smartphones, the authentication method called image authentication appeared because the image was easily handled electronically. However, the image authentication method has a problem that it is weak against speculation and peeping attack like the password method. In order to compensate for those vulnerable parts, we thought an authentication method combining information on human preferences. The computer learns design patterns, and when performing authentication, authenticate individuals from the result of discrimination as to whether or not they are design patterns preferred by the particular human being learned. At this time, since data which is hard to explain even in the person himself / herself like “which pattern is liked” is converted into data and authentication is performed with the data, it can be expected to improve resistance to peeping / speculation attacks existing in the image authentication method. In this paper, we propose a new biometrics authentication different from physical features and behavioral features used for authentication by letting a computer learn from human preferences, and a method of authenticating a specific individual using images We propose a hybrid method of authentication.

The Internet of Load Carriers - Design of a Cloud-based Service System for Smart and Connected Load Carriers

Authors:

Martina Romer, Johannes Zeiler, Sebastian Meißner and Johannes Fottner

Abstract: Nowadays, a main problem of special load carrier supply chains is the lack of transparency. This can lead to under- or overstock as well as the loss of load carries. To address this problem, the present research proposes the digitalization of the load carrier supply chain by equipping special load carries with sensor systems and using the generated data to offer financial, special-load-carrier, and data-based services. Especially data-based services are proposed to increase transparency and to enable companies to optimize their supply chain. Supply chain digitalization by means of smart load carriers combined with new services within a cloud-based service system can gain competitive advantages for involved companies, and enable new business models. Thus, the proposed services can improve overall quality, save time, and reduce cost while increasing sustainability for load carrier manufacturers and their customers.

Towards a Platform Architecture for Digital Content

Authors:

Olga Levina

Abstract: Digital platforms are currently being studied from different angles by information system scientists, software developers and economists, since they have shown their potential to disrupt business domains and create novel approaches for various business models. Nevertheless, the formal definition and the technical description of the platform as a digital infrastructure remain heterogenous among the disciplines as well as users. In this paper, process and methods used to derive technical and governance requirements for a digital content platform are described. Being rooted in the participatory action design research, the results provide a focused definition as well as realization suggestions for the digital artefact that can be used to be mapped on other disciplines as well as to the management of technical and governance-related aspects on digital infrastructures.

Towards Cloud Service Customization: A State of the Art

Authors:

Cristian Paez, Oscar Avila and Dario Correal

Abstract: Cloud computing is becoming an important tool that is offering multiple opportunities to organizations. However, cloud providers can not always offer personalized services that fully match customers’ needs. This occurs for several reasons, the most important is the level of investment required to design and operate personalized services considering the great number of customers and the diversity of their needs. In this context, this work presents a literature review to identify what are the main contributions made in the research literature to carry out such assessment. This review is made by defining three context and five customization research questions, making an analysis of each one of them in a filtered set of customization papers and finding families or categories that can answer the research questions proposed. The objective is to provide an overview of this research area and help researchers to develop new contributions for cloud service customization.

Authors:

Alekha Kumar Mishra, Asis Kumar Tripathy, Mohammad S. Obaidat, Zhiyuan Tan, Mukesh Prasad, Balqies Sadoun and Deepak Puthal

Abstract: Due to lack of an efficient monitoring system to periodically record environmental parameters for food grain storage, a huge loss of food grains in storage is reported every year in many developing countries, especially south-Asian countries. Although Smart Sensor Networks have been successfully implemented in various applications such as health-care, military, and wildlife monitoring, there are still various issues to be addressed in food grain storage monitoring applications. Due to the food grain storage infrastructure constraints, the commonly practiced network topologies of sensor devices such as mesh, star, and grid cannot provide an effective monitoring environment. In this paper, we proposed a topology using smart sensors that can effectively cover and monitor the food grain storage area. It uses a chained structure of sensor devices with directional antennas to accurately sense and report the environmental data. The proposed topology works better than common topologies due to its chain-based structure which remains unaffected by various hindrance imposed due to food grain storage infrastructure. From the experimental results it is conclude that the proposed topology has effective coverage percentage, detection accuracy, and message delivery over Cluster-based and Mesh topologies in food grain storage environments.
